ABOUT

Stephanie Gilmore won her first world championship event at age 17 on a day off from high school. Over the next four years she led the sport of surf, claiming consecutive world titles as the undisputed champ, until a violent turn of events abruptly ended her winning streak. Stephanie in the Water is an intimate documentary that chronicles Gilmore's return to the top and the costs that come along with being a world champion.

STEPHANIE GILMORE

8 x WSL World Champion

Eight-time world champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore was born and raised in New South Wales, Australia. Stephanie has dominated women’s professional surfing since her rookie year in 2007, winning four world titles in as many attempts – an accomplishment that no other surfer, male or female, has achieved in the history of surfing. Beyond her eight WSL world titles, Stephanie has 34 elite World Tour victories. For her triumphs, Stephanie was awarded the Laureus World Sports Award in 2010, considered the most prestigious award in action sports worldwide, and received two ESPN ESPYs for Female Action Sports Person in 2011 and 2013. Stephanie is considered a leader in the sport and one of the world's most stylish surfers, carving out her own path between the highest competition success and her free surfing abilities.

Ava Warbrick

Director

Ava Warbrick is an Australian born, New York based visual artist and filmmaker. Warbrick's short and experimental films have screened worldwide. THE FEAR, YEAR OF THE RAT and THE KEEPER were selections of numerous international shorts festivals. Warbrick's work has been included in Marie Losier's Women's Experimental Cinema program alongside Martha Coulburn, Peggy Ahwesh and M.M. Serra. Her film, video and artwork has been seen at Artist Television Access, Issue Project Room, Metric System and numerous galleries in USA and Australia. Warbrick's art department credits include Natalie Portman's directorial debut EVE which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Jordan Galland's ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE UNDEAD and Arden Wohl's TWO OTHER DREAMS. Warbrick is a graduate of Bard College. This is her first documentary feature.

ALICIA VAN COUVERING

Producer

Van Couvering’s first film as a producer, Lena Dunham’s TINY FURNITURE, won the SXSW Film Festival in 2010 as well as accolades from the Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, New York Film Critics Awards and many more. Her next film, Ry Russo-Young’s NOBODY WALKS, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released by Magnolia Pictures. Most recently she worked on, Joe Swanberg’s DRINKING BUDDIES, stars Olivia Wilde and Anna Kendrick, among other productions including Whit Stillman’s DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, M Blash’s THE WAIT, Bryan Wizemann’s ABOUT SUNNY, Todd Solondz’s PALINDROMES and LIFE DURING WARTIME, Steve Kessler’s PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE. She is a contributing editor to Filmmaker Magazine, an adjunct professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, a Creative Producing Fellow of the Sundance Institute, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for “Producer of the Year” in 2013.

ISABEL FREEMAN

Editor / Producer

Isabel Freeman began her career in documentary film as an associate editor on Oscar-nominated director Edet Belzberg's WATCHERS OF THE SKY, which won the Special Jury Prize for Editing at Sundance Film Festival in 2014. She edited Jesse Cain's SLOW BURN, which premiered at the New York Film Festival, and Mikey DeTemple’s surf film, SIGHT|SOUND—the best-selling surf film of 2011. She has edited a series of documentary shorts for Major League Soccer and worked on the digital campaigns for Vogue, Mercedes and the 2014 World Cup. She currently lives and works in London.

JESSE CAIN

cinematographer

Jesse Cain is a cinematographer who loves shooting on film even in this digital age. His own work, including a 13 hour opus "Parts + Labor", has screened at the New York Film Festival and Anthology Film Archives. He is a founding member of Deadhorse Films.
